SHOOT
POST PRODUCTION

About

Onepost (previously Filmlance in-house post department, based in Stockholm) is one of the busiest production companies in Sweden, shooting TV and film at multiple locations combined with resources working remotely with post production and deliveries.

Pain points

  • Needed to find a way to safely upload terabytes of camera data shot on a remote location with limited Internet capacity.
  • Make sure that uploaded data is consistent
  • Making sure editors and other stakeholders can start their tasks the next day, FTP meant delays with file transfers as well as lack of permission control and solid audit mechanisms.
  • VFX and post production in general suffers from slow file transfer, as most of the team was working from external physical locations.
  • Could not find a cost efficient service for fast, secure and reliable deliver if final assets to grade.

How they deployed and use accsyn today

Onepost built a DIT pipeline based on accsyn’s Hooks mechanism, and a VFX pipeline based on the accsyn Python API.

Onepost today use accsyn for all heavy lifting when it comes to file transfers:

  • DIT with File Sharing & Workflows; Transfer of camera raw material and dailes from remote shoot location to production offices. With additional workflow integration validating source material on arrival.
  • Sound & Edit with File Sharing; Media files are shared securely with both in-house and external resources.
  • VFX & Rendering with File Sharing & Workflows; Integrated into the VFX pipeline, using the accsyn Python API, allowing automated push and pull of material to both internal and external artists. Nuke and GPU renders, with sync of assets from remote artists, on the in-house farm.
  • Grading w. File Sharing & Delivery; Efficient delivery of final production assets to grading.

As many shows are confidential in their nature, accsyn has become approved by both HBO and Netflix for use in production worldwide.

Testimonial

After a brief period of testing, accsyn quickly became our go-to solution for pretty much all of our file transfers. Previously we relied on a mixed bag of solutions and fragile duct taped hacks.

Today we exclusively use accsyn for transferring media from on-set to our NAS. With accsyn we cut delivery time in more than half, we took security to another level, we got an easy web portal for administering it and with the brilliant central queuing system we’re in absolute and total control.

On top of that it’s been approved by HBO, which makes our lives very easy.

By using the Python API our pipeline developer have tightly integrated accsyn into our VFX pipeline, making it the backbone for all transfers to and from artists around the globe.

Working remotely has never been so easy and I don’t think we have had one corrupt frame delivered to us since we went from an FTP solution to accsyn.

The built in verification and the high resilience nature of it not only saves us time during transfer but also in QC and administration. It has gone so far that if we suggest some other method of delivery to our clients they have started to ask for accsyn instead, for example our editors can sync material from the Avid Nexis down to their setup at home or when out traveling – well tested in northern Sweden, in Italy, in UK and in the USA.

Today accsyn is such a crucial piece of our pipeline and workflows that I have a hard time seeing how we could do any production without it. I know it sounds like I’m trying to sell you a car here, but it’s honestly that good and

I truly love it

Summary

Onepost is a success story on its own, proving how valuable it is having fast and reliable file transfers that is controllable and scriptable – boosting production and improving production quaility over all.
